Local Produce Rolling In - Market Report 5-18-2011 - Pints, Pecks & Pounds

Local organic produce has started rolling in at the Mt. Pleasant Farmer's Market (every Tuesday at Moultrie Middle School on Coleman Boulevard from 3:30pm - dark).  If you're into locally grown produce, this is your nirvana.  I got there late-ish, around 6:30 and folks were starting to pack it up.

Visited the Owl's Nest Farms' stand and spoke with owner David Howe. Owl's Nest has been in business up near Lake Moultrie since 1992 (Eutawville - near Cross, SC).  They had pints, pecks and pounds, of organic produce for sale. Local produce available from Owls Nest 5/18/2011; brussels sprouts, garlic, potatoes (Butter Creamer, Fingerling, Purple Peruvian, Russian Banana), mushrooms (Shiitake, Portobello), radishes, shallots, spring mix, squash (Summer, Zucchini), strawberry's, turnips.

Kennerty Farms from Wadmalaw Island, another organic grower, featured ; honey, radishes, squash (pattypan, yellow, zucchini), sweet onions and beautiful zucchini blossoms.

Live music wafted out from under the music tent mixing with the subtle savory scents of gyros, popcorn  and brewing coffee. Vendors, families and kids bouncing around make for a percolating scene.  The oaks surrounding the market provide a respite leaf shielded spot for the weekly cornucopia.  An added bonus, the local produce appears to grow beautiful women, who seem to be in full blossom.  The Market cranks up every Tuesday afternoon throughout the summer and into the Fall.  Bicycle if possible, especially all you fortunate Old Villagers, parking's free but it's as scarce as the good eats are abundant.
