Sponsored by Coastal Expeditions
The Shem Creek Clean Up was created through the collaborative efforts of a multitude of local groups. Carolina Green Fair, Charleston Moves, Charleston Waterkeeper, The Mount Pleasant Land Conservancy and the Mount Pleasant Pride Committee have all teamed up to coordinate what they hope will be the first of many efforts to work together to green up the East Cooper region.
In this inaugural year, the focus will be on Shem Creek as it is one of the most iconic locations in South Carolina, perhaps more photographed than any other site in our state. Unfortunately, large amounts of litter build up in the marshes and along the edges of the creek every year and it is difficult to reach it all by land. There are multitudes of negative effects litter has on all of our Creeks. This clean up will help provide an immediate impact by removing much of the man made debris currently in the waterway and it will help raise awareness of the need for people to make greater efforts to avoid accidental and intentional littering of our natural areas.
Volunteers are needed to come out, paddle and pick up litter from 5:30pm-7:30pm on April 15th on Shem Creek. Coastal Expeditions is donating all the kayaks, equipment and staff to guide the organized clean up effort for the first 40 people to register. Everyone interested in participating needs to pre-register by e-mailing Chris Tullmann at chris@tullmann.org with Name and Contact Info.
Children under 13 must be with a parent, and will be in a tandem kayak. Anyone that requests a single kayak should include height and weight. For anyone that would like to help but does not want to get out in the kayaks, additional locations have been identified around Shem Creek where litter pick up needs to be done and is accessible from the land.
A special post clean up party will be held immediately afterward for everyone who participates in the Kayak event.
